Alphabet Rocks

We wanted to think outside the blocks and made the alphabet rock!

MATERIALS
  • 26 smooth flat stones
  • Crayons
  • Baking sheet
  • Modge podge

1
Warm rocks in even, so that crayons will melt when drawing on them.  We put our rocks on a cookie sheet in a 200 degree oven for 3 minutes.

2
Draw your letter onto the rock using a crayon. Be careful the rocks could be hot!

3
Allow wax to dry then paint over the wax letter and the rock with Modge Podge. Allow Modge Podge to dry and  you have alphabet rocks!

Note: We noticed that the bright colors show the best. Crayons with sparkles in them make a neat effect.

Some other ideas:

Write quotes on larger stones.

If you would like to use the rocks for spelling activities then make 2-3 sets.

Write wishes on the rocks and collect them in a jar.

Write ideas for rainy days on rocks. When it rains allow the child to pick a rock.

Use the rocks as an advent calender for Christmas.

Write numbers on the rocks.

Use the rocks in your garden to mark what you've planted.
